Are you ready for the first review of 2014?

I thought I’d start the makeup reviews by reviewing of one of the most popular styles of lipstick last year, aka the crayon style. While this lipstick isn’t a crayon, it’s unique in itself too. It’s a felt tip style, I’ve seen a similar product in Maxfactor, but nowhere else. I think its quite novel but of course, such a product has a fair share of drawbacks too. The product I’m talking about today is the Rimmel Lasting Finish 1000 Kisses Transferproof Lip Tint + Balm. I have the shade 130 Don’t Stop Blushing. So sit back and relax, and let this review help you decide if you need such a lipstick in your vanity.. or not.

My take on the product:

PACKAGING ~  You know what this reminds me of? A marker. The kind my school and high school teachers used, to write on a whiteboard. It has a felt tip which releases the product on your lips, you know, like the felt tip in markers. On one side you have the felt tip which releases color and on the other side you have a balm.

The cap of the balm side is tricky, you can easily break off the entire balm while pulling off the cap, which is why I’ve used the balm only once. The balm has shimmer in it. None of the testers at the Rimmel counter had the balm part and my guess is because of the tricky cap, if not the cap, its because the balm itself can easily break, like any normal lip balm stick.

COLOR vs. SKIN TONE ~ Don’t Stop Blushing is a pinky red color on my lips. It changes color slightly depending on the underlying skin color. My lips are a different color from the skin on my hand, hence the color is lighter in the hand swatches . This color will suit all skintones, but I don’t know if the color will show up on really pigmented lips.

You need to exfoliate your lips before applying this because its matte, you can see from the lip swatches that it settles into lines. Because of its deep color I found myself wearing it this winter, its one of those deep colors that doesn’t make me look old or make my lips look thin probably because its lighter on my lower lip. Its quite vibrant and brightens up my face, I think it is blue based.

APPLICATION & AFTER ~ For me, it’s a great tool to reshape lips. You can make your lips fuller by extending your lower lip, I’ve even altered my cupid’s bow using this. But you have to be absolutely precise while outlining your lips, any asymmetry is easily seen since this is such a vibrant color. I use my concealer first around my lips and then go in with this marker lip tint, it gives a smoother canvas to the area which eases the drawing part.
The color appears slightly darker on my upper lip because my upper and lower lip are of different colors. I wasn’t expecting this and it’s a bit of a disappointment. The lip tint takes some time to dry to a matte finish but its not a drying matte, I didn’t feel the need to put a lip balm. When you put the lip balm that comes with the liptint, it gives a satiny finish to the lips. The lip balm is tricky to apply, it makes my lips sticky and also the color starts transferring outside my lip line.

PRODUCT vs. DURABILITY ~ I was disappointed that this lip tint did not survive a meal. Since the color is quite pigmented, I expected that it would last through my lunch, you have to be careful while eating with this cause it can spread all over your mouth. Its transfer proof unless your lips become wet. I was happy that this did not dry out my lips, as long as you drink water every two hours, you are good to go.

REMOVAL ~ You definitely need a makeup remover with this. It leaves a stain on your lips after removal. If you use a wet wipe the stain is pretty strong, but with a makeup remover the stain left behind is a soft, like tinted lipbalm.

PRODUCT vs. PRICE ~ It costs Rs. 555. I think thats on the pricier side considering that the lip crayon is a felt tip and can dry out easily. I suppose Rimmel feels that its giving two products, a liptint and a lipbalm, but the lipbalm part is really useless for me. Firstly, the attached lipbalm isn’t of good quality( & everyone owns a lipbalm), secondly the attached lipbalm is likely to break off, thirdly the liptint is not drying and does not warrant a frequent usage of the balm.

FINAL VERDICT ~ 3/5.
I definitely love the color, but I don’t like that it changes depending on the skin color, and I end up getting a different color on upper & lower lips. Also, the balm is practically useless and also has a bad packaging. Another disappointment is the inability to survive a meal. How will it survive a 1000 kisses if it can’t get through a single meal??? For me, the redeeming points are the color, good pigmentation, matte and that it doesn’t dry out lips. I don’t think is product is a must have, but if you are searching for a different style of lipstick then you can check out this one.

Also, the rest of the shades in this range didn’t seem as pigmented as this one.

Keep in mind that if you make a mistake while applying this, make sure you have a good coverage concealer and outline your lips using that after the tint dries. And I would suggest being careful while applying a balm, the color may spread around your mouth as well.

So, is this on your shopping/wish list? If you already have it, let me know what you think of it =)
